The Chronicles of the Cloth Crap Catchers

One of the decisions I was wrought with anxiety over during my pregnancy was diapering. With the first three children, it was not a thought that ever crossed my mind. When I was given a pack of prefolds and diaper pins as a gift at my first baby shower, I chuckled at the thought of using them for anything other than a burp rag. Because, seriously, cloth diapers….EW!

In the five years that passed between my last baby and my current baby, a lot has changed. During this last pregnancy, I read blog after blog and review on top of review on the advantages and disadvantages of using cloth instead of disposable.

I read so much information that I kind of had a little meltdown. Overwhelmed with opinions and personal stories, I decided that there was no way I’d be able to do it. But then a few weeks passed and again it was up for discussion.

Chris really didn’t care one way or another (seeing as he is not the primary diaper changer). His only concern was my mental health. If I wanted to do it, fine. If I didn’t want to, fine. But either way I was to not devote so much mental power and anguish to something as trivial as a diaper.

Prior to Layla’s birth, I received several packages of disposable diapers as gifts. I stocked up on coupons and bought several more packs when the deal was right. I decided that a first time cloth diapering mother and a newborn were not going to be a good combination for me. Afterall, I had three other children to attend to.

End of story.

Or so I thought.

About a month ago, I realized my previously stocked diaper supply was running low. Everytime I threw a diaper away, I thought about how much money I was literally putting in the trash. So, back to the cloth diapering dilemma.

In a moment of weakness, I purchased 11 diapers and 10 inserts off Ebay costing me roughly $50. Out of over thirty different designs, the kids and I chose our eleven favorite.

The diapers arrived last weekend. Seriously, they are the cutest things I have ever seen.

It has taken me three days to figure out just how I am supposed to snap them to make them fit properly to avoid too big leg holes and the subsequent leaks. Last night, was my Eureka! moment.

It is still too early to say whether I am completely in love with them.

But, I’m kind of leaning that way.

I love my cloth diapers! Once you start you'll get hooked, and it won't be a big deal at all. Good luck...and if you have any questions let me know!

The one thing I would do differently. I really wish I had given cloth diapering a try. They just seemed so expensive at first. but I could have probably used for all 3 of my babies!! thus making huge savings. doh!

I'm thinking I would have tried this if I could do it over again. But when I started having kids all I could remember were the old cloth diapers my mom used to use. They were terrible!

I only ever used disposables- but I also wasn't blogging back then. I wonder if that would have swayed me- to read everyone's stories!
