Within minutes of her birth, Ruth underwent open heart surgery.
The doctors gave her the smallest of chances to survive. The first surgery, if successful, would only be a temporary fix.
It was only a matter of months before she was back in the CICU. This would be no short visit. Ruth would not be coming home until she got a new heart.
Day after day, month after month, I visited my niece in her hospital room. No one really understood how sick she was. Or how exhausting a smile could be. Every afternoon, for as many days as I could, I sat by her side trying to absorb her every breath.
When the call came in the middle of the night, I slept no more. A heart was en route. Ruth was being prepped for another surgery. The one we prayed would be her last.
One year ago this week, Ruth came home from the hospital with a new heart. A new life awaited us all.
And after two years, our prayers have been answered.
Ruth is my Magic Moment.
