The Practice Round

For the next few weeks, Eva and I will be getting our practice in for when the new baby arrives. My sister is taking a 4 week summer class so she can enter into the nursing program come the fall. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I have the privilege of watching Ms. Ruth.

Eva loves all things baby. And even though Ruth is just a few months shy of two, she is not quite the typical toddler. Since Ruth spent more than half of her life in a hospital bed awaiting a new heart, she’s a little behind developmentally. Right now, she’s more like a 9 month old. To Eva, though, none of this matters. She just loves having a real life doll to play with.

I didn’t tell Eva about our new babysitting gig until last night. She would have driven me insane with a minute to minute countdown. Although she is a huge help in the baby entertainment department, her concept of time is a little lacking.

Before Ruth arrived, Eva had already arranged a small play area full of “baby approved” toys and books. She selected the shows to watch on TV and created a short agenda of “things to do with Ruth.”

For our first day as babysitters, I am pleasantly surprised that I am able to sit here and write while two children play nearby. I hope this is a glimpse into our future!

Our big plan for the day (aside from snacks and naps) is a short walk to wish my grandpa a happy 85th birthday. He lives a few blocks away from us and what better way to ease into nap time on the first day than a stroller ride.
